Beloved Character Analysis - 1122 Words

In the book Beloved, Toni Morrison gives the audience, many choices to think about what is really happening in each section to get the point of what’s going on. The audience has to ponder on each character. Let’s take Sethe for example, as a character to mainly focus on. In Beloved,Sethe is a mother to four children and a wife to Halle. Sethe has been through so much ever since the very beginning. She had to make a rough choice about whether she would kill her oldest daughter, Beloved. Sethe ended up killing her oldest daughter and she also tried to kill her other children, but she was stopped from doing it. Sethe’s choice had to have been the wrong choice or the right choice. Sethe’s â€Å"rough choice† was the right choice because she wanted†¦show more content†¦What is more important, is Sethe never got the best experience of being a child and growing up which gives the audience the right to understand her situation about killing Belove d. It follows then that Sethe became a better person as she was moving forward because of Beloved. Sethe’s â€Å"rough choice† was the right choice because now there being a baby ghost Sethe thought as Beloved as her best thing. In Sethe’s view, â€Å"I made that song up, I made it up and sang it to my children.† (pg.176) This demonstrates how Sethe might of felt confused, but happy at the same time when she told Beloved that she made up the song that Beloved happened to know about. Another example is, â€Å"the one I managed to have milk for and to get it to her even after they stole it.†(pg.200) Morrison’s point in this quote is to tell the reader how hard Sethe was trying to do everything she can for Beloved, when she was alive, and it made her become a stronger woman. According to Sethe she says, â€Å"You came right on back like a good girl, like a daughter, which is what I wanted to be and would have been..†(pg.203) This exemplifies Sethe knowing Beloved is somewhat a better version of a daughter than she ever was and just thi nks of her as a really good person to have in her life.
